New Book Release

February 01, 2012 By: admin Category: Arkansas in the Civil War, New Book Releases, The Civil War Hub of Arkansas

The Toothpick received an email regarding the publication on a book whose plot takes the characyers to Arkansas during the War Between the States. This may be of interest to some of our readers:

I invite you to read Queen of the Lost, the story of Lucy Holcombe Pickens of Texas and South Carolina and sister-inlaw of General Elkanah Greer who led the third Texas Cavalry. He and his men met at Bentonville and fought at Pea Ridge, eventually positioning his men at Elkhorn Tavern. His wife Lucy’s sister had been with him at Frog Bayou, doing some nursing, before they rode out.

Greer was the Texas president of the Knights of the Golden Circle prior to the war.

Lucy, wife of S.C. Governor Francis Pickens, had attracted great attention from the czar when she went with Ambassador Pickens to Russia in 1857, enough attention to come home with jewels to outfit the legion named in her honor.

A history buff said, “You will enjoy the historical parts of Queen of the Lost as our author takes us on a journey with Lucy’s family into several states, leading us into the Civil War, through the hardships of the war upon the South, Lucy’s home of Edgefield, S.C., and, of course, the adventurous life and travels of the most charming Southern Belle Lucy. Knoxville, TN

And another from Alaska writes: “I really enjoyed it and wished it would go on forever. I keep replaying parts of it in my mind even now.”

New Book Released On Arkansas Civil War Flags

February 22, 2009 By: admin Category: New Book Releases, News, The Civil War Hub of Arkansas

Pelican Publishing has recently released a new title The Flags of Civil War Arkansas. This recent release features various regimental and other flags carried by Arkansas troops during the Civil War. The Flags of Civil War Arkansas
As author Glenn Dedmondt notes, “Sadly, many of these emblems of honor have not survived to modern day. But from wartime newspaper accounts and from the description of presented flags, I have recreated, when possible, full color scale drawings, which at least creates the spirit of some of the lost flags.”

During the 150th Anniversary of the War Between the States, there are many preservation projects underway. One such project is the placement of a monument to Arkansas soldiers that were killed at the Battle of Franklin, TN in 1864. One of the many countless Arkansawyers that gave the ultimate sacrifice was Irish-born Arkansas Confederate General Patrick R. Cleburne. There is no monument to these brave men- even 150 years later! This is a shame and this will be corrected. The Arkansas Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, headed by the efforts of compatriot Everette Burr, is raising money to have a monument constructed and placed on the battlefield in Franklin, TN. These men gave their lives in a suicide charge commanded by General Hood- perhaps one of the greatest military blunders in American history. Please donate $1 or however much you can spare to make sure these men will never be forgotton! The whole project is estimated at $7,000. Over $1500 has been raised thus far.
