Toothpick November 2009

By admin | November 22, 2009

In this issue of The Arkansas Toothpick are several major projects that the Patrick R. Cleburne Camp is currently involved and a history-making conclusion of a long-awaited preservation project. Arkansas Civil War buffs will also be given quiet an interesting resource for those interested in General Robert E. Lee and U.S. “Butcher” Grant. The Arkansas Toothpick can also host bragging rights in search engine placement!

One of the most involved and most important projects that the Patrick R. Cleburne Camp and the Arkansas Division have been busy on for the past few years is the marking of the Confederate mass grave section of the Little Rock National Cemetery. For months, Camp adjutant Ron Kelley has been in communication with the district office of the Veteran’s Administration in Memphis, Tn regarding the placement of four corner markers denoting the approximate boundaries of the mass grave of 900 Confederates near the large oblisk placed by the United Daughters of the Confederacy in 1913. Permission was finally granted to place the four corner markers. The markers are made of granite and installed at the National Cemetery by Son of Confederate Veterans Edgar Colvin. Mr. Colvin has marked over 1500 graves, including Confederate, Union, and civilian graves throughout the years.

The Cleburne Camp has been in several local newspapers recently, inlcuding the Monticello newspaper for the monument dedication in Drew County a few weeks ago. Other media coverage includes SEA Life magazine in South East Arkansas and the Pine Bluff Commercial for the annual Camp White Sulphur Springs living history in October as well as an entire page-writeup on the placement of Confederate Veteran W.W. Cherry’s stone at the Jenkin’s Ferry state park. With the reenactment year coming to a close, the Cleburne Camp remains busy as ever.

Tuesday night, the Cleburne Camp re-elected Camp Commander Mark Kalkbrenner. The slate of officers remains unchanged, including Rex Norris as 1st Lt. Cmdr, Bill Turney as 2nd Lt. Cmdr, Ron Kelley as Adjutant, and the Commander reappointed Andy Taylor as Camp Chaplain.

November is a time of the year for planning the holidays that will be upon us before you know it. There are a couple of CHristmas parties that are schedulled in December: The Cleburne Camp will hold its annual Christmas party on December 3rd at the Watson Chapel Fire Station on Sulphur Springs Rd (there is a map to the fire station on the right-hand column on www.arkansastoothpick.com). The party will begin at 7pm and families are not only welcomed, but encouraged to attend. We will be playing “Dirty Yankee”. Yes, I realize this is a redundancy, but nevertheless, bring a gift valued at or under $10 for the exchange (and taking) of gifts. Last year proved to be a big success! Also be sure to bring your favorite holiday dish for the potluck dinner for the evening. Another Christmas party will be held at Reed’s Bridge for Arkansas Civil War buffs around the state. The party will begin at 6pm at the battlefield and will last unil 10pm on December 12th.

For those who are looking for gifts to purchase for the holidays, help the Arkansas Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans by [urchasing gifts online at http://scv.we-care.com/ At this website, a percentage of the money you spend this holiday season will be sent to the Arkansas Division. There are many stores online at this site to choose from!

For all the Sons of Confederate Veterans, make sure you call 1-877-240-8473 to update you biographical information in the Sons of Confederate Veterans Membership Directory.

The next event for the Arkansas DIvision will be the annual David O. Dodd service in Little Rock and the next event for the Cleburne Camp/1st Arkansas will be Arkansas Post. The Arkansas Post event is slated for January 30th at the state park at Arkansas Post.
