Arkansas Toothpick- The Civil War Hub of ArkansasJuly 26 saw a lot of activity in the Arkansas Delta region around Helena. July 26, 1862 was the third and final day of an expedition that left Helena on July 24 to Marianna and it was the first day of a three day scout to Searcy and West Point. The same date in 1863 saw a skirmish near Bayou Meto, while this date in 1864 was witness to a bloody action at Wallace’s Ferry at Big Creek in Phillips County.

Military actions in this “Today in Arkansas During the Civil War” column can be traced better using the Civil War Arkansas: A Military Atlas. You can trace the same roads they walked in many cases in this atlas. You can find obscure references to communities mentioned in Civil War records that can be located in this atlas. Civil War Arkansas: A Military Atlas is the perfect companion book for this “Today in History” series.
