On this day in Arkansas Civil War history, expeditions were being launched from Helena in 1862. The Union army under the direction of Samuel R. Curtis, had just entered Helena on a few days prior. Expeditions were launched to scout the countryside for food and general intelligence. Today marks the third day in an expedition launched from Helena to Arkansas in the Civil War: A Military Atlas[/caption]Coldwater, Mississippi. It also marks the start of another expedition from Helena to Marianna, which would last three days. The Union army had plenty of soldiers for simultaneous expeditions with the 10,000 that entered the Delta with General Curtis.
Military actions in this “Today in Arkansas During the Civil War” column can be traced better using the Civil War Arkansas: A Military Atlas. You can trace the same roads they walked in many cases in this atlas. You can find obscure references to communities mentioned in Civil War records that can be located in this atlas. Civil War Arkansas: A Military Atlas is the perfect companion book for this “Today in History” series.
