These photos are of a very rare artillery shell on loan by Charles Maggio. This shell would have been fired by the battery section of the 1st Indiana/5th Kansas “Steel” rifle, as the Official Records of the War of the Rebellion note. There were very few battles during the Civil War in which these would have been fired, Helena was one of them. The Blakley, or Steel rifle was situated in the area near current day Cleo Dunning Park sits in the north section of Helena. These shells are on display at the Helena Museum in the Civil War room.
