Battle of Helena Interpretation
These photos show more of the contours of the battlefield in Helena. This this the rugged terrain the Confederate army had to overcome before their third and final charge on Battery C. Imagine after having marched 100 miles in the Summer in the flat Arkansas delta and coming to this. The terrain played a key factor in the Union victory, as General Prentiss (US) used the terrain to his advantage. To this day, many Confederate soldiers remain in these gullies and ravines, known only to God.
