Battle of Helena InterpretationThis photo is a view of the First Baptist Church in Helena from Battery C. Following a third and final charge, the Confederate army under the command of General Sterling Price this church would have been the location of the original Fort Curtis.

Price’s army attacked the Union works on Battery C at around 8 am on July 4, 1863. By noon, the Confederate army was in a full retreat. The angle from Battery C to what is now the church would have been strewn with wounded and dead Confederate soldiers, and parts of soldiers. Today the church is part of the unique skyline in Helena.
